Penny is an experienced criminal lawyer and insightful advocate who commands respect through her determined criminal defence. Graduating with a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Business (Industrial Relations) (QUT) in 1999, she has worked exclusively in criminal law for over fifteen years.
Penny is a highly qualified and experienced advocate who has successfully represented clients in the Magistrates Court, District Court, Court of Appeal, and High Court of Australia. She has also represented clients in specialist tribunals including the Coroner’s Court, Medical Board and the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal in various matters ranging from the issuing of blue cards to racing appeals.
Penny is one of a very few female Queensland Law Society accredited specialist in criminal law in Queensland. She maintains her up-to-date knowledge of Australian and Queensland law through her regularly requested presentation of criminal law papers to the legal profession.

Jim Coburn – Consultant – 0408 159 307
Jim is one of Queensland’s most experienced practitioners in the criminal jurisdiction. He commenced his legal apprenticeship in 1980, working in a solicitor’s office by day and studying for his law degree by night. Jim graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (QUT) and was admitted as a solicitor in 1987.
Jim has worked exclusively in criminal law for more than twenty-five years and has been a partner in a number of high-profile law firms. In 2011, he joined Peter Shields Lawyers as a consultant. Jim has significant and diverse experience in matters relating to both Commonwealth and State law, drug related offences, fraud and tax crimes, domestic violence issues, and traffic law infringements.
Jim works tirelessly in defending the rights of people with diverse personal histories, circumstances, and legal issues. His compassion and comprehensive understanding of criminal law provides his clients with insightful and strong legal defence.

Simone graduated with a Bachelor of Economics and Law (James Cook) in 2003. She is a highly qualified solicitor with over ten years experience practicing in criminal law.
Simone is dedicated to providing the very best defence for her clients. She has extensive experience in all areas of criminal law from minor traffic matters to major fraud, drug trafficking and murder charges, and has appeared in the Magistrates, District, Supreme Court and Court of Appeal.
Simone takes pride in protecting the rights of legally aided clients, and has a reputation for defending members of our armed services in courts and tribunals.

Kristy Bell – Solicitor – 0423 494 824
Kristy Bell graduated from Griffith University with a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and a Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice in 2011, and has been admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland since 2012.
Prior to working as a solicitor, Kristy was the associate to His Honour Judge Farr SC and His Honour Judge Jones, both Judges of the District Court in Queensland. Working as a Judge’s Associate provided Kristy with extensive experience in all facets of both the criminal and civil justice systems.
Kristy then worked as a prosecutor with the Brisbane Police Prosecution Corps, as well as with both the Queensland and Commonwealth Offices of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Kristy has worked on all types of criminal matters including criminal asset confiscation, welfare fraud, tax fraud, child exploitation material and importation matters before the Magistrates, District, Supreme and the Court of Appeal.
Of particular interest to Kristy is the area of confiscations. Kristy has a thorough and extensive knowledge of the laws and practices concerning confiscations matters and brings extensive defence and prosecutorial experience to our firm.
Kristy is arguably the most experienced practicing private solicitor in the field of criminal confiscation.
Kellie Watts – Practice Manager
Kellie graduated with a Bachelor of Economics (ANU) in 1993 and a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) (QUT) in 1996, during which time she worked for News Limited in a variety of roles.
Kellie completed two years of articles at Phillips Fox, one of the largest law firms in Australia, and worked for a number of years in many areas of law specialising in insurance litigation, particularly professional indemnity and Federal Workers Compensation.
Since its inception in 2009, Kellie has worked as Practice Manager within Peter Shields Lawyers. She combines her extensive civil law background with her interest in criminal law and financial administration.
Kellie is dedicated to providing clients and the firm with highly efficient financial administration and management.
